Tire Tips: Tire Buyer's Guide

Edge Wear

When the inside and outside edges of the tire are worn, it generally indicates an underinflated tire or hard covering.

Center Wear

When the center of the tire is worn, as shown here, it generally indicates an overinflated tire.

Shoulder Wear

When the shoulder of the tire has a thin line of wear, it usually indicates misalignment.

Irregular Patch Wear

Flat spots and patchy or scalloped wear generally indicate improperly balanced tires or bent/worn suspension components.

Worn Thread

Narrow strips of smooth rubber across the tread are wear bars, designed to indicate that the tire is worn and needs replacing.

How to extend the life of your tires

How you drive and maintain your tires affects tire life nearly as much as where you drive. Here are a few tips to help extend the life of your tires.

Maintain good driving habits
  • observe posted speed limits
  • avoid fast starts and sharp turns
  • avoid potholes when possible
  • park carefully away from curbs

Observe vehicle loading guidelines
Important vehicle loading information can be found in the Owner’s Manual and/or the tire placard located inside the front driver-side door.

Maintain correct inflation pressure
Using a quality tire gauge, check the pressure in your tires at least once a month and before any long road trips. Check your tire pressure when the tires are cold. For the proper cold-tire inflation pressures, see your Owner’s Manual for tire pressure label location and/or the tire placard located inside the front driver-side door. Maintaining proper air pressure in your tires can help improve the ride, save fuel and maximize the life of your tires.

Rotate tires regularly
Rotating your tires can extend tire life by up to 20%. In general, your tires should be rotated during every other oil change, or more frequently depending upon your driving habits and road conditions. See your Owner’s Manual for the tire rotation schedule.

Inspect tires regularly
Once a month, take a few moments to check all of your tires, including the spare. Look for signs of tire wear or visible damage. Make sure all the tire valves have valve caps, which help keep our dirt and moisture.

Maintain your vehicle regularly
Because many vehicle components, including shocks, struts, and brakes, can affect tire performance, have your vehicle inspected regularly at our dealership and follow the recommended maintenance schedule listed in your Owner’s Manual.
